Dive into the world of underwater photography with Elizabeth Blank. Utilizing the beautiful heated outdoor Del Mar pool located on the grounds of Laguna Cliffs Marriott, Elizabeth will discuss in detail her underwater photography process. Hear all about the specific gear that she uses to create underwater images as well as the gear she uses to optimize her personal endurance under the water. She will review how she begins each session, from dialing in her manual settings to assembling everything she needs before diving in. She'll cover the different lighting scenarios you might encounter under and around the water and will show you how to find the best light in the pool and place your subjects to create beautiful images. Finally, you'll see all of these pieces come together as you watch Elizabeth in action photographing two different subjects. Students are welcome (and encouraged!) to enter the pool to photograph the models as well. Bring your underwater gear if you have it (whether it's the latest-and-greatest underwater housing or just your iPhone in a waterproof case) and join Elizabeth in the pool to photograph the models, or stay dry and observe the session poolside if you prefer.
Learning Objectives:
- Learn about current underwater cameras on the market and the gear needed to succeed - Learn how a housing unit is assembled to ensure you keep your gear safe and prevent water damage - Learn how to identify the best light available within the pool and how to guide your subjects towards the best light - Understand how to prepare your body to ensure stabilization once under the water
Surf's Up! California is the ultimate place when it comes to beach vibes! Join Sophia for a surf-inspired maternity shoot at the beach with a young couple. She will show you how she uses the beach and ocean as the "prop" for her sessions and how to naturally (and minimally) incorporate props.. We will go over how she guides her expecting couples with gentle direction and lots of fun in order to capture authentic images. This is no boring maternity shootout, and you'll learn how to ensure that the father-to-be is an active participant for most of the session. If the conditions permit, Sophia will also show you how she uses the ocean to create images that are unique and out-of-the-box by using her underwater housing as well as how she creates over/under images by the shore.
Participants will be invited to shoot along in small groups, so bring your camera and a couple of favorite lenses. Shooting in manual and being able to change your settings on the fly are highly recommended but not required.
Learning Objectives:
- Learn how to gently direct instead of posing and how to nail those moments that happen in the blink of an eye - Learn how to infuse fun/emotion into a shoot that most husbands find boring - Learn how I use the environment and the light as main source of inspiration and how to very minimally style a shoot in a way that will not take away from the life-like experience - Experience how Sophia edits a few images from the shoot in an exclusive video for participants that will be delivered after the shoot
