KEYNOTE: Chasing Light: Behind the Scenes
Limited Capacity seats available

Documenting a widely-admired and closely scrutinized individual is an immense responsibility, and one Amanda Lucidon fulfilled to great acclaim. As one of only a few female White House photographers in history, Amanda Lucidon spent four years documenting First Lady Michelle Obama and President Barack Obama. Can we say dream job? This talk goes behind the scenes of some of the most powerful moments in Lucidon’s collection of photographs of the First Lady, offering a rare insider’s perspective on her experiences as a photographer and discussing the powerful impact of visual imagery on our past, present, and future.

Amanda will speak photographer to photographer. She will discuss her approach to documentary photography, share how she evokes emotion in the viewer while striving to create a connection between the viewer and a diverse set of people and places, and discuss her triumphs and challenges during her time in the White House. Finally, as a trailblazer in an industry typically dominated by men, Amanda will speak candidly about her experiences and how we as women can lift each other as we climb in our professions.

Amanda will also host a book signing after her keynote. A limited number of copies of her New York Times bestselling book, Chasing Light, will be on hand. Attendees may also purchase a copy in advance at Amazon.com.

BOUTIQUE PROGRAM: Dreamy Seascapes
Limited Capacity filling up

Join Kristen Ryan and capture creative seascapes with filters, intentional camera setting choices, and perspective. You will begin with a discussion of basic settings for beach photography. Surveying the environment, you will consider how you can use foreground, shoreline, and perspective to add depth to seascapes. Kristen will then demonstrate ways to capture the entire dynamic range of the scene including using a graduated filter, multiple exposures or exposing for the best possible single exposure. She'll talk about the various shutter speed options for capturing the ocean and kind of image you will achieve with each. Finally, you'll see Kristen demonstrate the use of a neutral density filter to capture long exposures. Following the demonstration and discussion of these concepts, there will be time for questions, discussion, and student shooting. Those with tripods and filters can experiment with long exposures and those without can focus on composition and dialing-in the ideal exposure. It is recommended that students have experience shooting in manual mode. It is also recommended that highlight warnings are turned on in-camera and that students know how to turn on bracketing in camera. If bringing a neutral density filter, a Little Stopper (6 stops) or Big Stopper (10 stops) is recommended. Tripods and filters are recommended for trying the various techniques but are not required to attend the session. All attendees are welcome to observe and learn for later practice if they don’t have a tripod or filters accessible.

Learning Objectives:
- Learn basic settings for seascapes and how to compose for depth at the beach
- Learn how to capture the dynamic range using a graduated filter, multiple exposures, and histogram evaluation
- Experiment with shutter speed creativity and using neutral density filters for longer exposures
