KEYNOTE: Chasing Light: Behind the Scenes
Limited Capacity seats available

Documenting a widely-admired and closely scrutinized individual is an immense responsibility, and one Amanda Lucidon fulfilled to great acclaim. As one of only a few female White House photographers in history, Amanda Lucidon spent four years documenting First Lady Michelle Obama and President Barack Obama. Can we say dream job? This talk goes behind the scenes of some of the most powerful moments in Lucidon’s collection of photographs of the First Lady, offering a rare insider’s perspective on her experiences as a photographer and discussing the powerful impact of visual imagery on our past, present, and future.

She will discuss her approach to documentary photography, share how she evokes emotion in the viewer while striving to create a connection between the viewer and a diverse set of people and places, and discuss her triumphs and challenges during her time in the White House. Finally, as a trailblazer in an industry typically dominated by men, Amanda will speak candidly about her experiences and how we as women can lift each other as we climb in our professions.

BOUTIQUE PROGRAM: Why We Play: Creating Lasting Moments & Imagery
Limited Capacity seats available

As photographers, we are charged with the incredibly important task of creating a visual legacy for those who are in front of our cameras. We want our photos to capture not only how our subjects looked, but how they lived and how they loved. Join Virgina in this shooting boutique, as you reframe your approach and using play-based, moment-driven, child-centered methods, can help your subjects be who they truly are. This shift allows the photographer to capture the unique connections, love, silliness, quirks, and imperfect perfectness of the people in front of the camera. When you create opportunities for children and families to play together, you can not only give your subjects images that they will cherish, but memories that will last forever. In these photo sessions, the experience matters just as much as the photos that you create.

This shooting class will examine not only how to lead a play-based, moment-driven family photography session, but will explore why Virginia feels it’s such a vital perspective to use throughout both your professional and personal photography. Watch Virginia conduct a family photography session using her play-based methods and have opportunities to shoot in groups to get real-time practice using the tools from class. Virginia is an open book and will answer any questions candidly and honestly throughout the boutique session and in a Q&A period at the end.

Focal lengths between 24mm and 85mm will be useful for this type of session - Virginia will use a 24-70mm to capture both wide and tight shots that can tell a full story. Experience shooting in manual mode is a bonus, but not required.

Learning Objectives:

- Learn to establish trust with the people you are photographing
- Learn to incorporate a play-based, child-centered approach to photography through connection games and prompts
- Gain tips and tools to encourage playfulness and genuine connections with your subjects
- Get ideas on how to train yourself to shift your perspective and trust yourself
- Understand why the experience of the photo taking matters as much as the photos themselves
